broken zamboni

obsessed with words, pictures, feelings.
i laugh too loudly and cry too easily.
and i skate like a broken zamboni.

lesson notes - 10 may 2012

her other student wasn’t there, so i got to go first again, yay! my legs were happy, too, since again this week i went trail running on wednesday evening, and they were tired from the moment i stepped onto the ice. gotta start doing my wednesday runs in the morning, i think.

we started off with the dutch waltz pattern, going over it in the book and then stepping through it around the ice. i’ll get it someday.

swing rolls were a little better this week. a little better. need to keep the blade parallel to the ice, toe pointed down in front - “no football foot,” my coach likes to say, meaning my toepick should not point up!

my progressives got complimented profusely, and they felt a lot stronger this week.

those “outside two-foot turns” still felt crazy foreign, though. i just have to keep working on them. we figured out that i’m coming up out of my kneebend not only too early but too much - gotta stay down in my knees and work on the swivel.

backward crossovers: now she wants me to work on two left back crossovers and then leaning into the same direction, then pulling my feet together and switching sides, using the momentum for more power as i head into two right back crossovers. and repeat, and repeat, traveling back and forth across a straight line down the length of the rink.

planning to practise at an area rink on sunday, and i can’t wait.

i got this bag on clearance at target for less than $13 - i figured if i didn’t like it, i could keep hauling my skates around in the huge red duffel i’d been using. but i’ve used the new bag, above, for a few weeks now and just love it! it’s somehow just the right size and shape for my skates (i have little feet), but i can always get more stuff (guards, towels, skating outfit, gloves, the cheapo thin socks i wear when i skate (which have the hockey canada logo on them and come from the giant tiger store in kingston, ontario), snacks, camera, water bottle, etc etc etc) into it without it looking too jam-packed. so nice to bring my skates to work without looking like i’m moving in for the weekend.
